David Beckham’s début Bodywear collection for H&M has quality and longevity at its core. This first capsule introduces nine underwear styles for men which will go on to form the products of the long-term unique partnership between David Beckham and H&M. Designed by Mr Beckham’s in-house team and sold exclusively at H&M, the focus is on fit, function, comfort and design, avoiding overt branding to present a range of new classics, comprising of briefs, boxers, vests, tee-shirts, pyjamas and long-johns. The result of eighteen months of research and development, the collection aims to set a new standard in men’s bodywear for the 21st century.

Collectively with my design team we spent time working on the feel, fit and style to ensure the product is not only something I would wear but one which I would be proud to put my name to. This first collection presents the nine key products in their most basic form to highlight the quality of the design (view all items in the expandable). There are four underpant styles –briefs, trunks, boxer-briefs and woven boxers; three tops –DB’s perfect tee-shirt, vest and Henley; and then two bodywear styles –pyjama bottoms, and also long-johns, the secret favorite undergarment of many men in the colder months. Cotton is used throughout, with the right elastane in the briefs, trunks, tee-shirt and vest to still have a soft feel. Cotton waffle is used in the Henley and long-john, and a special finish on the 100% cotton pyjamas to ensure they retain their shape. The collection is a first in a long-term partnership with H&M, which will seasonally develop with new styles, new fabrics and new patterns which will all follow the quality-focused blueprint of David Beckham’s new classics.

This season's collection was basic black in palette and mood, appropriate given that Paul Helbers, who heads the menswear design team, was inspired by the monochromatic dress sense of the Amish and the disturbing work of David Lynch. That recipe for a split personality was served on a runway wreathed in shadow, to the tune of Roy Orbison's "In dreams" (which, after its appearance in Lynch's 'Blue Velvet', probably still soundtracks some people's nightmares twenty-something years later). One central conceit of the collection was the doubled jacket, as in a lush shearling that trailed an attached leather parka like a tail, or a jacket that had a puffa vest built into it. One suit left its vest dangling in back. It was part of an ensemble -jacket, pants, shirt, and dangling puffa- in a flaming vermilion the polar opposite of the somber shades that otherwise dominated proceedings. The show notes called it 'Motel Red'. And the splits just kept on coming. A Motel Red blouson unzipped to reveal a peek of quilted black leather (D Lynch's motels concealed dark secrets, too). The footwear was schizophrenia in a shoe. And the final evening jacket in dusty black dévoré velvet looked well and truly worn in, almost Amish in its sobriety, bar the sprinkle of sequins that added a sparkle of sin. It was the last flicker of light in a suitably strange parade.

In Hojin, Song Woojin, Kim Youngwoo and Sung Jinhwan are the boys of Korean band Sweet Sorrow. Their name comes from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet". They met at the male choir of Yonsei University and turned professionnal when they won the Yoo Jae-ha Music Competition in 2004 with their eponymous song, releasing their début album in November 2005. The boys will drop their third album at the end of the month. "Viva !" is the title of the first single. This is a love song. Perfect for the upcoming Valentine's Day. It says that love makes you dream and dance. Sometimes it's scary, sometimes it hurts but in the end, it's the most beautiful thing in the world. So enjoy love full on !

"Subversive" was the word Lucas Ossendrijver used to describe this season's vibe. Where there is tension, there is energy. The tension arose from the face-off between the classicism of the Old World and the urgency of the New. Outerwear that may have started life as an officer's coat (double-breasted, épauletted) was re-seamed to within a millimeter of the models' whippet-thin forms and closed with magnets instead of buttons. Though one jacket had sporty puffa quilting attached to its front, the monochrome torso was more linear than ever, made even more so by the wide-cut flares that went with it (there were still leggings—narrow, zipped-ankle numbers—too). That particular silhouette -tightly tailored jacket, baggy pants- was the quintessence of Lanvin's mix of Old and New. It could have been Berlin in the thirties; Bowie in the seventies; Depp, or any other dandy in the Naughties underworld. What it also represented for Alber Elbaz was "a return to elegance -the word is always being used to describe old people. When you talk about the young, it's always 'cool' or 'sexy', but we wanted to introduce elegance to the young". Helping make the introduction was an emphasis on composure and restraint. What stood out was how covered up the models were in their layers. Some wore wide fedoras mysteriously pulled low over one eye (another of this week's irresistible links to a Bowie incarnation -the alien Thomas Jerome Newton in 'The Man who fell to Earth', 1976). But otherwise, everything was directed to highlighting the faces of the boys. The final outfits featured velvet jackets over white shirts buttoned to the neck. Underneath, a mock turtleneck pushed the models' faces up into the light. Mr Elbaz and Mr Ossendrijver have always emphasized the individuality of the Lanvin man. Here was a striking acknowledgement of that commitment.

Miuccia Prada is nothing if not full of surprises, and Frederic Sanchez's pedal-to-the-metal soundtrack for her show was only one among many of the question marks that hovered over her offering for this season. Bearing in mind that one must always be aware of the context she creates for each new collection, the audience was offered Brandy Alexanders, Manhattans, and Blue Lagoons -cocktails from another time and place. The canapés were luridly colored squares of sandwich anchored with cocktail olives, and the set was a two-storied house with linoleum on the floor. So far, so kitsch. And that was before we saw the brown suede jacket with the maroon diamond pattern, or the mock turtleneck in emerald green Lurex -the kind of items a flashy traveling salesman might have donned in the sixties or the seventies to cruise the casino in whatever one-horse burg he'd washed up in for the night (after he'd been driving all day with the Priest on his eight-track). Some of the models carried a big square bag that could well have been that salesman's sample case. Mercifully, you can't pin a Prada collection down to one scenario. Mr Salesman is nobody's dream. But here, there was also a bizarre subtext -britches, stockings, pudding-bowl haircuts- that suggested puritans, until the knee-highs turned Lurex-sparkly. It certainly wouldn't be the first time that Prada has deliberately flirted with the out-of-time peculiar. Getting back to suede for a moment, Miuccia Prada has always insisted it's one of her least favorite things, yet it was all over this collection. In fact, she was even sporting a black suede jacket. But that intangible oddness may actually be the essence of Prada. She could have been quoting from herself with Art Déco prints (more mock turtles) that looked like sixties upholstery. And the ultra-boxy super-large 3-button jackets that determined the collection's silhouette took the deconstruction the label has been flirting with in its menswear to a logical but alienating extreme. A blast of Motörhead's "Ace of spades" took us back to that salesman-in-the-casino analogy. The cards remind us that life's a gamble. And Miuccia Prada surely knows that not every bet pays off. Über-large outerwear, seriously ? Peccato.

Kostas Martakis released his third studio album last month in Greece and Cyprus. He's just dropped the eponymous fifth single, "Entasi " ('Intensity'), written by Dimitris Kontopoulos, with a highly fashionable video directed by Apollonas Papatheoharis, featuring top model Vicky Kayia and TV host Mairy Synatsaki. Kostas Martakis will be the guest host of 'MadWalk 2012' on February 8 at the Tae Kwon Do stadium in Phaliron and "Ένταση" will be performed live at the begging of this fashion music project.

Frida Giannini's men's show for this season marked Gucci's 90th anniversary. The cornerstone of the collection was a lean 2-button suit, which trousers flared slightly over the shoe. With Faces-era Rod Stewart croaking over the sound system, the connection with a vintage Gucci moment was inescapable. But la signora Giannini has found her strength in that connection. Streamlined luxe for the Ur-jet set was Gucci's original calling card, and the designer laid on a master class in subtle opulence, from the opening trench in ostrich through the double-breasted croc blazer to an astrakhan sweater for evening. Funny thing though -as excessive as that ménagerie may sound, it played as quite easy, even restrained, due to the muted colors and casual attitude. Time has taught Frida Giannini how to bring a light touch to the legacy, how to integrate her own experience (the snappy dressers of her girlhood rock dreams) with the demands of a long-established house like Gucci. And when one model strode down the catwalk in a shaggy swath of Mongolian lamb, the two worlds collided beautifully.

On a recent night at Hotel Delmano, a stylish speakeasy in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the heavily tattooed head bartender, Sam Anderson, and his colleague, Michaelangelo Davis III, were shaking up cocktails with manly vigor. Each had his hair done up in a bun. In certain arty neighborhoods like Williamsburg and Bushwick, some men are twisting their long hair into a form more famously worn by librarians, schoolmarms and Katharine Hepburn. But don’t call the male version an up-do or a chignon. Call it a man bun.
The line between utilitarian convenience and fashion statement can be hard to draw with the man bun. On the tennis court, players like Alexandr Dolgopolov and Xavier Malisse have been known to wear them. Certainly, there and in the food and beverage industry, keeping hair away from the face is important. And at Hotel Delmano, Mr Davis, 26, sometimes uses his abundant bun as a pen holder. But he and Mr Anderson could not hold up their heads wearing hairnets. As for ponytails, to Sam Anderson, 30, they evoke "Steven Seagal, hippie uncles and the like", and would not be a good fit in this neighborhood. A hat is an option, but a bun is less sweaty. The man bun is similar in form to the topknot worn by many women -which is going through its own fashion resurgence- but it is often worn slightly lower on the head.

Once you’ve committed to a man bun, how do you create one ? Alexander Kellum, 31, a fine-arts painter and yoga teacher who lives in Williamsburg, bends forward and pulls his long chestnut hair in front of him; then he performs a twisting and wrapping motion until his hair is firmly tucked into a knot at the back of his head. Sometimes he’ll let a little hair poke out for an 'abstract expressionist' flourish, he said. A rubber band, a hair band or even a piece of string holds his bun in place. Mr Anderson and Mr Davis use plain rubber bands to anchor theirs. "I bought one of those scrunchy things, but it just didn’t work", said Sam Anderson, who also plays bass guitar for a gothic rock band called River Wild.
Chris Jones, a contestant of this season's "Top Chef" cooking show, uses elastic hair bands swiped from his wife to tie up his bun. The first time she noticed one missing, he said, he told her the cat must have taken it. Mr Jones, who lives in Chicago, is fully aware that some people consider his floppy bun to be ridiculous, but said : "I’m very secure in myself. I’ve actually worn my hair in pigtails once or twice".

You could theorize that a man who wears a bun is in touch with his feminine side, but the form also has a masculine tradition. Sikh men have long tied their hair in a bun, covered by a turban. And centuries ago, the samurai wore a topknot. Mr Jones, 31, draws inspiration from that association. "Who doesn’t love the samurai ?" he said. "They’re committed to their ways and devoted to their passions". Chris Jones is committed to growing his hair long so he can donate it to Locks of Love, which provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children with hair loss. In a few months, his (only very occasional) hairstylist, Andreas Hogue, will give him a marine cut, to harvest the most hair possible. Then he will start over until, once again, his hair is long enough for a man bun. German model Berthold Rothas (above) already had his cut some days ago.

"Decadence" was the appropriate word. Imagine the last fashion show on the final night of Western civilization. Rei Kawakubo showed a collection that literally piled reference on reference like a mad last gasp, starting with the little poodle-y wig plopped on top of each model's head. She made some pretty incongruous connections : between denim and dense jacquard, between a U2 tee and a Lurex-threaded cutaway jacket, between tuxedos and pajamas, and on a bigger stage, between diametrically opposed cultures like Japan and China. That was the brocade-and-complex-pant subtext. And yet the shabby, silken languor of the clothes also put you in mind of palazzo-panted cocktails on the terrace of comedienne Lucille Ball's home in Beverly Hills on a lazy Sunday afternoon. In other words, the collection embraced a multitude of alternate realities. That has always been Rei Kawakubo's ineffable imprimatur. Here, she mushed the propriety of Edwardian England together with the sparkly tack of Vegas-as-mammon, then mixed in a handful of disciplinary mid-calf felted military coats. It made for a typically obtuse vision of cultural apocalypse. But there's an irresistible conviction to her vision. Very bobo chic.
