Flemish designer Walter van Beirendonck, 51, graduated in 1980 from the Royal Arts Academy in Antwerp and launched his label in 1983. Clearly inspired by ethnic influences, his designs are recognizable by either strong graphics or innovating cuts and unexpected color combinations. The red thread is his sense of humour, sex with a wink and his concern about safe sex : Walter van Beirendonck likes complete unconventional context.
This Spring / Summer 2008 collection is called Sexclown. Virtual avatars have been fascinating to him ever since the mid-90s. The ability to project oneself as a fantasy is the final evolution in the process of body manipulation. This collection combines the digital lifeform with another all-time classic fascination : fetishism. He wanted the models to look like they just stepped out of the virtual world as pure fantasy characters.
