Bruce Montgomery, Daks' head of menswear design, is exceptionally good at taking the hallmarks that Daks is famous for, such as its trademark highly tailored suits and formal wear, and adding subtle twists. Take, for instance, the stylish suit, umbrella and bowler hat combination. Montgomery emphasises the formality of The City uniform to such a degree that it becomes retro (Daks started in 1894) and Thirties (a souvenir of dad’s slacks ?), rather than merely stiff and stuffy. Traditional country-house dress such as tennis whites and black tie are presented straight, but with a knowingly ironic spin, as if to say 'great fashion is, and will always be, timeless'. Amen to that.
